Ola Eleogram

Age: 21
Birthdate: May 28, 1986
Hometown: Hana, Maui

In over twenty-five years of the Association of Surfing Professionals’ (ASP) existence, there has never been a Maui surfer on the World Championship Tour. So it’s no surprise that all of the young hotshots coming out of the Valley Isle are vying to be the first. Roll out the Red Carpet

In the eco-friendly and ultra-stoked green world of cinematographer Dave Homcy, of Shelter and A Brokedown Melody, and Patagonia Ambassador and waterwoman Crystal Thornburg, their presence has been in high demand of late to promote and talk about their involvement in the award winning surf film/social documentary Sliding Liberia: A Story of War, Peace, and Surfing. The film made its O‘ahu premier on Saturday, July 26 at Café Hale‘iwa on the North Shore.

Winter Gun Preview

Lock and Load

It sounds like thunder is in the air and you realize it’s the rising shore break. The traffic on Kamehameha Hwy thickens. It’s wintertime and the big boys are getting their big toys out to play. These surfers are hunters. Hit men. Warriors. They use specialized weapons to challenge big game like third reef Banzai Pipeline and epic Waimea Bay. These surfers are our heroes. Everyone would love to know what it feels like to get spit out of 12-foot Pipe or escape down a heaving 25-foot face with hammering Waimea whitewash nipping at your heels. You don’t catch trophy waves with just a big bravado, you need a dialed quiver to make the kill. Some of our favorite Hawai‘i pro surfers show us their arsenal of winter guns. Lock and load!

When it rains, it pours. And on July 16, the final day of the holding period for the second Macy’s E-Series event at Ala Moana Bowls, it was raining three- to four-foot sets and the high scores were pouring in for the professional portion of the ASP 1-star WQS showdown. It was a full day of bests, and the conditions were setting the blistering pace. “This is the best day of competitive surfing I’ve seen this year,” touring professional ASP Judge Dave Shipley. “ The waves we’ve seen today and the level of surfing is as good as anything you could possibly witness in professional surfing.”
