Grom Report:Lahikiola Minamishin |
|
|
Volume 4, Number 9
|
Dedicated, determined and humbly dusting his shoulders off with each
first place trophy, Lahikiola Minamishin is well on his way to the top.
In the vein of Kekoa Bacalsco and Dustin Cuizon, Lahiki has a loose,
fast and powerful style that proves maturity beyond his years. Fred
Patacchia, Jr. noticed Lahiki’s potential early on, and awarded Lahiki
the coveted “Golden Ticket” to NSSA Nationals in 2006. He went on to
place second in the Mini Grom division and continued ripping into the
New Year. Lahiki shows no signs of stopping, skillfully carrying the
Big Island tradition of domination into surfing’s next generation.

her home break of Kewalos, Carissa was cool and competent among more
than 60 competitors (and only three other girls) ages 16 and under at
Quiksilver’s King of the Groms Hawai‘i qualifier. Showing the boys
who’s boss and taking the crown, Moore is the first girl to advance to
the world final in the event's three-year history.

Damage Inc.
By Mike Latronic
Surfing in America has really hit the mainstream. One need not look far
into big media for examples. There’s now an HBO drama chronicling the
not so normal life of surfers. And while John From Cincinnati works his
magic, some of our favorite surf brands have hit Wall Street with
annual sales near 2 billion dollars. Modern girl power was restarted
and restated from Blue Crush forward and cute Disney movies rarely miss
the opportunity to sketch some kind of board riding into their plot—
fuzzy little creatures not withstanding. For your soul or your favorite
slogan, good or bad, surfing has evolved as a sport and a culture. And
nowhere is this more pronounced than in Southern California each summer
at the largest gathering of top young amateur surfers in the USA: the
National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) Nationals.

largest and most revered amateur surfing events in the state, this
year’s 22nd annual Local Motion Surf Into Summer saw 267 shortboard,
longboard and bodyboard competitors over three days of pumping, summer

Makua Kai. Why? |

A strange phenomenon emerged among surf media recently. In every piece
of press on Makua Rothman, he is referred to as Makua Kai Rothman
lately. With no real explanation, one might begin to wonder, is it one
of those celebrity things like when Sean John Combs entered the music
scene as Sean “Puffy” Combs, then changed his name to just ‘Puffy
Combs’, then to ‘Puff Daddy’, later to ‘P. Diddy’ and now, as of
October 2006 according to Wikipedia, he is simply ‘Diddy’.

Photos & Words By Tyler Rock
Hawai‘i boys down under for the WQS Men’s West Australia Margaret River
contest. It’s time to get some work done. Pro surfers get paid to
travel around the world and surf—seems plush enough. But working with
ever-changing conditions in the water can make a day at the office
unpredictable and frustrating. Getting the shot or making the next heat
becomes more about luck and strategy than raw talent. This is the diary
of what really goes down on the road when the conditions are not always
perfect. FSM’s Tyler Rock, Big Island surfer and
photographer/videographer, bunked with Hawai‘i’s Fred Patacchia, Jr.,
Joel Centieo, Mike Dodd, Sean Moody and Jesse Merle-Jones to watch it
all go down.

world’s top amateur surfers. This year it was held in Almada, Portugal
at Costa da Caprica Beach, with Team Hawai‘i winning the Tag Team
competition and receiving the bronze medal for their overall
