Rethinking latitude and longitude
FSM international correspondent goes MIA
The modern art of surf travel has evolved into an overtly accessible,
expensively pre-packaged monster. With a click of your mouse you can
have a ten-day, all-inclusive boat trip to the Mentawais, complete with
air-conditioned cabins, all the latest surf videos and a high-speed
Internet connection. But for some adventure seekers, a week in a
high-end surf resort doesn’t get their blood pumping, and can even
leave a foul taste in their mouths knowing the same amount of money can
bank you a month or two on the open road. Beau Flemister is one of the
true adventure seeking few.

Electricity is something we take for granted on a daily basis. It
powers our homes, our refrigerators, our computers—our lives. It
usually takes a natural disaster that knocks out the power to wake us
up to the reality of our 110-watt crutch. The food in the fridge won’t
last long, especially if you keep opening up the door for another beer.

There is no hiding the fact that eco-friendly and sustainability are
two concepts that have swept the nation. Divert your eyes, put those
squishy earbuds into your ears and crank up your iPod, it doesn’t
matter. Earth-friendly products and thinking are here to stay. And for
good reason. As our world society of almost 7 billion people becomes
more aware of our compounding waste and the finite nature of our
natural resources, changes have to be made in the way we go about our
daily lives of consuming if we truly wish to sustain.

Pancho Sullivan relishes in another North Shore victory
Event: WQS 3-Star Monster Energy Pipeline Pro Presented by Billabong
Date: Jan. 30 & 31, Feb. 5 & 6
Location: Pipeline to Off The Wall
Conditions: 2- to 4-foot and rippable
Once again this winter season, the ASP has been dealt an ironic hand
that had almost no one (except for the local boys) laughing. The
prestigious Pipeline Masters got skunked in December, the final going
down at Off The Wall. Pancho Sullivan could hardly find a wave with
enough push to do a turn, let alone get barreled. Two weeks later an
epic swell rolled in just in time for Da Hui to take advantage of
perfect Pipe for their local event.

While the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and the influx of traveling
surfers canvassed the North Shore, a crew of snow-starved surfers
dodged the melee and went in search in powder and solitude in British
Columbia. Their plan was to hit three pristine snowboard destinations
over their six-week journey: Whistler Blackcomb, Mike Wiegele’s
Helicopter Skiing and Revelstoke Mountain Resort. The salt-crusted crew
adjusted their bindings, waxed their snowboards and grabbed a beanie,
dubbing their adventure the Triple Crown of Snowboarding.

Anyone who’s watched Peahi break can attest to the okole-puckering
intensity of the wave. Every time an 80-foot face detonates on the
reef, a massive amount of potential energy is released. The massive
north and northwest swells we see at Peahi are the end result of
hundreds, sometimes thousands of miles of wind energy blowing over the
vast expanse of the north Pacific. This enormous amount of energy is
translated into swell, and there’s a lot of punch packed into each set.

The Bubos Show
There is no doubt about it, Megan Abubo is on a roll and she has
cemented her place as one of the top female surfers leading the charge
in the progression of women’s surfing. She’s been competing on the
Women’s World Tour since 1994 and has won 8 elite tour victories in
waves as diverse as their locales, like California, Fiji, South Africa
and France. No doubt growing up in the powerful surf on O‘ahu has given
her the strength and courage to destroy just about any break in the
world.
