Country Crash Pads

Hotel, motel, Holiday Inn, who needs that when you’ve got deluxe right on the sand?

By Chelsea Johns

Surfers, with their fat paychecks and glamorous, jet-setting lifestyles, aren’t much different than their Hollywood counterparts. We know the boards they ride, the exotic locales they frequent, and the hotties who hang on their arms, but not every Average Joe has experienced the crip pads that house pro surfers as they lie in wait for the next macking swell, Triple Crown event, or North Shore blowout. We didn’t have time to stake out every oceanfront property speckling the North Shore strip, but we did squeeze in a few exclusive crib tours from some of the Country’s most prestigious team houses during this year’s winter freak show. We let the pros lead the way…

Culture Clash

Event: The 38th Annual Surf N Sea Hale‘iwa International Open presented by Matsumoto's Shave Ice and Vertra
Date: Dec. 21-31, 2007 (waiting period)
Location: Hale‘iwa Ali‘i Beach Park
Conditions: 2- to 4-foot high-performance, fun ones!

hio1.jpg While most of the North Shore was being battered by strong trade winds in late December, Hale‘iwa's unique location was prime for competition, offering up rights and lefts for the roster of local and international surfers. This year HIO hosted more than 250 surfers from South Africa, Australia, France, Portugal, Brazil, Israel, the US mainland, Japan and the outer Hawaiian Islands. The cool thing about the HIO is the camaraderie amongst competitors and local families. The event formally started as the Mabo Royal, which was to be a goodwill, community experience—an exchange of cultures and sharing the waves of Haleiwa's Ali`i Beach. “I feel these were very important first steps because it bridged the gap between generations, cultures and personalities that are still strong today,” HIO director and pro surfer Jason Shibata said.

Big Bones and Backyard Bombs

By Kevin Whitton

dahui1.jpg EVENT: Sixth Annual Da Hui Backdoor Shootout
Date: Jan. 9, 11 & 12, 2008
Location: Backdoor and Pipeline
Conditions: Heavy 10- to 12- foot Pipe and epic 6- to 8-foot Backdoor

Uncle Eddie Rothman perched himself at the edge of the beach path in between the Volcom houses, watching unridden 20-foot waves race down the reef at Pipeline. As people walked by they greeted him with handshakes, kisses and small talk about the surf, but Rothman never took his eyes off the ocean for long. “Backdoor means you either backdoor Pipe or you backdoor Backdoor,” explained Rothman. “Either way, you got to backdoor it to really get barreled. That’s what these guys are doing and having a good time. We’re stoked we got to run our contest.”

Ladies First - The Valley Isle's Songbird: Anuhea

BY TIFF HERVEY

“Only you hold your destiny,” musical talent Anuhea says of her music’s message. “It’s a lyric to one of my songs, “Endlessly,” but the underlying message of almost every one of my songs is just that. Life is a gift and we can do anything, I repeat, anything we set our minds to. Some are dealt a more difficult hand than others, and will have to work harder for the life they want, but the rewards are always so much sweeter for one who fights for it.”

Enjoy - Wahine Surf Photographer Carol Oliva

There is a sparkle that certain people have in their eye when they are fearlessly living their dreams. They have a peace about their face that so many don’t have. They have a genuine glow about them because nothing is more joyous than being free. If you ever see surf photographer Carol Oliva enter a room, you know within a nanosecond that she is one of these blessed people.

“It’s hard to say when photography really started for me because as far as I remember, I was doing it,” Carol recalls. “My dad was a photography lover and always gave me little cameras for kids on my really early days. I fell in love early on with photos. I just didn't know that it would be my career in the future.”
