Talk Story with Shane Dorian

Shand-Dorian1.jpgThe Life and Times of S. Dorian
By Daniel Ikaika Ito

Kona’s Shane Patrick Dorian is a huge fan of Def Jam CEO/New Jersey Nets owner/hip-hop icon, Jay-Z. “I love Jay-Z,” says Shane-O. “He’s pretty tight.” Dorian’s biographical surf video is named The Blueprint, which gave mad props to Young Hova’s sixth album. Right now, Dorian is bumping Kingdom Come, Jay’s latest album. The lyrics off the track 30 Something share similarities with Shane-O’s life:

“Thirty is the new 20 n!@#$/ I'm so hot still/Better broad better au-to-mo-bile/
bet a yard, nah bet a hundred mill then/ by the songs end/I probably start another trend/
I know everything you wan do/I did all that by the age of 21 by 22/ I had that brand new Ac Coupe/I guess you can say that my legend just begun…”

Mana

mana1.jpgHe’s not the photographer who covers surf contests. He’s not a dotcom lensman. He’s not a Myspace guy (although his exclusive blogs of the insider surf scene have many addicted.) He is a photographer who captures one element in Hawai‘i’s surf realm: the mana.

MANA: nvs. Supernatural or divine power.

Jeff Walthall, a.k.a. Mana, is known among the local surf community as a photographer for the West Side, a location that is well-respected and protected from exploitation by the surf and tourism industry.

Road to the Crown The 26th Annual Vans Triple Crown of Surfing Preview

triplelogo.jpgBy Kevin Whitton

On the North Shore, some things are inevitable come November and December: swells rolling in from the northwest, trade winds, the rain, the rainbows, the traffic, the tourists and the annual Mecca of professional surfing to the already bustling seven-mile stretch of prime surfing real estate, both in the water and on the beach. Some people are sick of it; they loathe it in fact, the influx of outsiders, the ignorance and disrespect in the lineups and on the highway and the overflowing trashcans on the beach paths.

Maui Mayhem

mauimayhem1.jpgEvent: Ian Walsh’s Menehune Mayhem Presented by O’Neill
Date: Feb. 3, 2007
Location: Ho'okipa Beach Park, Maui
Conditions: Burly winds, beefy waves and brawny talent

Mayhem was the perfect word of the day for Ian Walsh’s Fourth Annual Menehune Mayhem surf event at Maui's Ho'okipa Beach Park. The swell rose throughout the day, starting off at 4 feet in the morning and maxing out with 8-footers by day’s end. Despite the rising swell and typical, windy conditions, the Maui groms were charging hard.

Kai Kane - Makua Rothman

Prince of Da Hui. Award-winning, big-wave charger: tow-in or paddle. Prolific pro surfer. Deep-sea hunter. Country boy. These are all titles that have been tagged on 22-year-old Makua Kai Rothman. But only one label truly applies: Makua is a waterman. He simply loves to be in the water. Whatever Mother Ocean dictates the conditions to be, he will find a way to play with her. The native Hawaiian also regards the sea as a place of sustenance, where he can catch his own food. He is grateful and humble to be born and raised in Hawai‘i and have grown up on the North Shore’s world-class waves. This place is quite literally, his life.
