Surf Science: Breathing Barrels

By Jack Kittinger

“Spit! Welcome to Pipeline.” —Turtle, from the movie North Shore, 1987

Turtle’s words from the classic ’80s surf flick North Shore were in response to watching a grinding barrel puke a rider out of Backdoor. Nothing is more indicative of a wave going off than spitting barrels. Associated with big, hollow surf, the spit is a mesmerizing feature of the Hawaiian wavescape.

Fit For Surf. Easy Does It

Don’t let training be the cause of your next injury

I’m just like any of you readers out there. No, really, I am. I read the mags and admire the guys like David Rastovich. He does yoga, right? And it’s supposed to help your surfing? Well he seems cool and mysterious, likes saving dolphins and has a funky tattoo on his foot; yeah, maybe this yoga thing might be good for me, too? FSM published a story on Bikram’s yoga (volume 3 number 12) a couple years ago. I recently came upon the article and decided to give this yoga thing a try.
Like many people, when I try something for the first time, I go “all in.” I bought a $30, 30-day unlimited Bikram’s yoga pass in Kailua and proceeded to frequent the joint religiously. I went six days in my first week and as I had imagined, the place was swarming with hot chicks. And by hot chicks, I mean being sandwiched between two sweaty middle-aged men. Score!

Once upon a time, surf movies meant something. But by the late ’90s, the movies had turned to videos and then eventually turned to flicks, leaving surfers with a formulaic and segmented view of surf culture and more so, the world, as locales mattered little compared to the waves. Snap, cutback, tail slide, tube ride, air, floater; Repeat.

World Games Update Day 4: No Foolin On April Fools

mld_mg_1591With the much-anticipated swell filtering into the Southern Hemisphere, the surf was cranking with double-overhead sets and closing down the second podium for a good portion of the day. As a result, the contest site for the second podium was moved farther down the beach, with the girls repercharge put on hold due to conditions. Not so for the boys, as the boys under-18 heats hit the rough conditions and were on the prowl to find the right openings for a solid hit or two.

FREESURF: It seemed like you just took off on a roll this year. Granted there was some talk of a rivalry between you and Sally [Fitzgibbons], but it seemed like it was more of a matter of when, not if, you would secure your title this year. Was there a point this year when you felt like, “yeah, I can win a title this year”?

Carissa Moore: I think every woman on tour wants and believes that they can win a world title, otherwise they wouldn’t be competing at this level. Dad and I talked about the title a few times, but never more than using it as motivation. Sally was nipping at my heels the whole year and there was a placement shift halfway through where I was nipping at hers. It was so close that I never really could let my guard down, just had to keep my head focused and take everything one step at a time. When the seconds started counting down in the Steph-Sally semi in France and Steph was ahead, I think that was finally the moment that I let it all go. Read more...

Freesurf: What was your life like before you became a team manager?
Rainos Hayes: Well, I grew up on the North Shore pretty much in the same place that I live now, kind of by Sunset Beach. I was a pro for a while and rode for Quiksilver from about 15 to 25 years old and had a limited amount of success.
