Better Know a Sponger: Dave Hubbard

Hub1Lihue, Kauai
25 years old
Drop-knee connoisseur

By Jeff Mull

There’s a lot we can say about Dave Hubbard. Rippah, shreddah, da bugga is funny…and so on and so forth. Throughout his tenure as a pro bodyboarder, the Kauai-born lad has cemented himself as the epitome of good nature. On land, Hubbard’s all smiles, cracking enough one-liners and jokes to warrant his own HBO special. But put young Hub in the water and it’s an entirely different game. Dave’s a spectacle on the sponge—prone or drop-knee. Hell, he’s even got his own Wikipedia listing. Apparently, he’s a bit of an innovator in the realm of the drop-knee world as well, pulling the second-ever drop-knee rolo.
We know there’s a rift between the surf world and the bodyboard world, but if there was ever a man capable of winning the hearts and minds of both worlds, it’s Dave. He’s impossible not to like and, as was previously mentioned, he drips talent. Personally, I’ve surfed with Dave a few times, and every time I see him in the water, he continues to impress me. A certain early morning session at a very-secluded-as-in-I-will-never-mention-the-spots-name-for-fear-of-my-life wave on an outer island stands out in my mind. In the lineup, Dave was redefining what was possible in the keg—bodyboard or thruster. The kid was getting deep, making ridiculous ledges going drop-knee, and driving crazy lines on the face. Impressive stuff indeed.
In his mid-20s, the future looks very bright for the Kauai native and drop-knee world champion. Look for Hub to bring his act around the globe where he’ll continue to wow competitors and spectators alike with his unique lines and unparalleled sense of humor. Good on ya, Dave.

Carissa Moore is standing at the edge of ‘Ehukai Beachpark gazing out toward Pipeline. She’s perched perfectly to scope Pipe and the sandbars at the same time. Her head sways back and forth as small waves roll through impact zones up and down the beach. Her father, Chris, is by her side, surveying the conditions as well.
“We could paddle out here,” Chris says, looking toward Pipe. “It would be good for you to get some waves out there right now.” Carissa smiles in agreement, up for anything.

carissa-qsWe’ve been lucky enough here at the mag to have had the privilage of working with one of Hawaii’s greatest surf talents. If you’re not already aware, I’m about to drop a Freesurf spoiler on you: Carissa Moore—you know the one…tanned, polite, surfs better than you—guest edited our last issue. Pretty cool, eh?

FREESURF: It seemed like you just took off on a roll this year. Granted there was some talk of a rivalry between you and Sally [Fitzgibbons], but it seemed like it was more of a matter of when, not if, you would secure your title this year. Was there a point this year when you felt like, “yeah, I can win a title this year”?

Carissa Moore: I think every woman on tour wants and believes that they can win a world title, otherwise they wouldn’t be competing at this level. Dad and I talked about the title a few times, but never more than using it as motivation. Sally was nipping at my heels the whole year and there was a placement shift halfway through where I was nipping at hers. It was so close that I never really could let my guard down, just had to keep my head focused and take everything one step at a time. When the seconds started counting down in the Steph-Sally semi in France and Steph was ahead, I think that was finally the moment that I let it all go. Read more...

Freesurf: What was your life like before you became a team manager?
Rainos Hayes: Well, I grew up on the North Shore pretty much in the same place that I live now, kind of by Sunset Beach. I was a pro for a while and rode for Quiksilver from about 15 to 25 years old and had a limited amount of success.
