Carissa Moore, 14, upsets world surf champ in Australia |
|
Punahou School student Carissa Moore, 14, upset world champion Layne Beachley of Australia in the first round of the Roxy Pro women's surfing contest on Monday. The first and second rounds of the contest were held in 2- to 4-foot waves at Snapper Rocks, Coolangatta, Australia.
Moore, who is a freshman at Punahou and still an amateur competitor, had to win a separate trials event to earn a spot in the Roxy Pro. "I think Snapper is the perfect wave, and it's my dream come true just to be here," said Moore. "It's not that big of a deal that I won, I just had fun surfing against Layne."
As a first-round winner, Moore received a bye in the second round. She will have to face Beachley again in the one-on-one third round. Among the other Hawai'i surfers, Megan Abubo and Melanie Bartels also advanced to the third round, but Rochelle Ballard was eliminated in the second round.
The contest is the first stop on the 2007 World Championship Tour for women.

This month DC’s Bruce Irons joined his brother Andy for the sixth
running of the Irons Brothers Pine Trees Classic, a local contest that
gives back to Kauai’s kids. All the locals, ages 6-12, got hooked up
with lots of product from the Irons’ sponsors (including DC) and even
more goodies from local vendors. Go to dcshoes.com to see a bunch of
exclusive photos from the event.
Kauai, where the Irons’ grew up, has a very unique culture for young
surfers. All the older and accomplished surfers make it mandatory to
help the younger kids, surfing with them constantly, giving them
pointers, and fostering their growth as the next generation of rippers.
The Irons Brothers Pine Trees Classic is a reflection of that vibe,
helping Kauai’s youth and showing them a great day at Hanalei.
The day of the event brought perfect surf for the kids, little 2-3
footers right in front of Pine Trees in Hanalei Bay. The level of
surfing talent, especially given the extremely young ages of the
competitors, was absolutely incredible! While the kids shredded and had
fun in the water, the bbq was fired up on shore, and the kids also
enjoyed their fill of shave ice all day thanks to the boys from Tamba.
The day closed out with Bruce and Andy handing out trophies and LOTS
of product to the stoked kids. Overall, the Pine Trees Classics was a
huge success once again, and a huge thanks to Bruce’s parents Danielle
and Phil and the rest of the locals for stoking the kids out. Please go here to see the photos from the day.
