Burger King HASA Championship Hawaiian Amateur Surfing Association Ala Moana Bowl, Oahu June 4 - 6, 2008 June 7, 2008 - Honolulu -- Whopper size waves treated finalists to some action at the Ala Moana Bowl as the double over head surf took competitors by surprise for the final day of competition. From 7:00 A.M. surf started to build and by 10:00 A.M., eight foot faces kept surfers scratching to the channel in the biggest surf of the young summer season. For Kal Farot, the Ala Moana local used his local wave knowledge in capturing the Grandmasters title as he took positioning on the best sets of his heat. Not to be out done, Todd Murashige from Honolulu found open doors and found a couple of nice hollow "Bowl" pits in taking out the Senior Mens as the other finalists in his division could only watch and wish. In the Junior Men, the pro four man format gave surfers more breathing room to move and better wave selection. Hawaii Kai'sTylen Yamakawa surpised the other three competitors with two solid waves in taking down Maui's Dege O'Connell, Honolulu's Kapu Ping and Big Island's Levi Gonzales respectively. The early morning final of the Boys division was the stage of Hawaii's future, as Ha'a Aikau, who had just recently won the Local Motion Surf Into Summer at the Bowl just two weeks ago, took down a tough field of competitors, with Keanu Asing in runner-up, Molokai's Kaoli Kahokuloa in third followed by Sheldon Pashion. As for the girls division, Nage Melamed from Kauai, took top honors with one keen eye on wave selection and the other on avoiding the big closeout sets. Melamed was followed be Missy Valdez, Lani Doherty and Erika Steiner, With the event completed with trophy presentations at the Hard Rock Cafe Friday evening, the BURGER KING® State Championships was all about putting together the best surfers, in the best waves this summer and having it "their way".
