Day 2 of Burger King State Champs scores 6-foot Bowls E-mail

June 6, 2008 -  Honolulu -- The second day of competition for the BURGER KING® State Championships saw some prime surf conditions for statewide contestants as wave heights reached six foot faces at the Ala Moana Bowls surf break.
The call to hold the Burger King State Championships couldn't have been better picked as waves are due to pick up throughout the night and the finals for 24 divisions may reach epic size as well as perfect conditions. Something, the event has not seen in more than six years.

Standout for Thursday was Levi Gonsalves from the Big Island of Hawaii who capped his third round heat with a two wave score of 17.5 in the Open Mens division, an impressive feat for the 15 year old. Heat winners in the Open Men were Tanner Hendrickson from Maui, Christian Enns from Hawaii and Scott Shimoda from Ewa Beach.

As the division is open to  all male competitors qualifying from the Hawaiian Islands,  the mix in ages gave spectators a variety of personality in surfing styles. For one, the age difference between Gonzales and Enns of twenty plus years brought old school/new school together as both Big Island competitors displayed styles that are decades apart in advancing on.

For Shimoda, who starting competing as a twelve year old, the now 27 year old father of a one year old child came out to prove he can still keep up with the young pack.  "This is my comeback," chuckled Shimoda, a goofy-footer,"to see if I still got it."

Hendrickson, along with Gonsalves are surfing in the Burger King® States as a tune-up for this summer's big National Scholastic Surfing Championship in June in San Clemente in respective high school divisions. "I'd like to win the Burger King® States, and move on this summer for a big national title as well," said Gonzales.

As for Friday's competition, the event start at 7:00 A.M. and wrap up at 1:30 P.M. The awards ceremony will be held at the Hard Rock Cafe on Kapiolani Boulevard from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. with trophy presentation.  For details and schedule go to www.hasasurf.org or call the Hawaii Amateur Surfing Association at 808.262.2488.
