August 22, 2008  - Honolulu - - Newly crowned women's world longboarding champion Joy Monahan (Honolulu) capped off the summer of her life by winning the Roxy Jam Honolulu presented by Schick® Quattro for Women® today.

The event was held at Waikiki Beach as part of the Duke's OceanFest. Monahan, 22, surfed to a convincing win over a stellar local lineup in the final and earned $2,000 for her result. The Roxy Jam Honolulu is a three-star Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) contest, now in its second year.

August 22, 2008  - Another day in paradise here in Waikiki , Queens, for the 3rd ISA World Title of the Tandem surfing history. 24 teams came where tandem surfing was born a century ago. Thanks to the Duke and his Festival to give us the privilege to surf in such a great place.

Barack Obama bodysurfs Sandy Beach

Barack Obama bodysurfed today at Sandy Beach today, a place he frequented as a teen-ager growing up in Honolulu.  The presidential candidate was photographed shaking hands with bodyboarders, catching a few waves and paying homage to his late mother whose ashes were scattered off East Oahu.

Besides going to Sandy's, Obama went to Hanauma Bay with family and friends. Obama left his Kailua rental at 7:54 a.m. today, in his last full day of a week-long vacation. The motorcade, which included five cars and two police vehicles, arrived at a rainy Hanauma Bay at 8:29 a.m. Mayor Mufi Hannemann greeted the party.

Obama, who wore his favorite White Sox cap, a gray T-shirt and black shorts on the excursion, carried a large Macy's shopping bag filled with beach gear. Obama was accompanied at Hanauma Bay by his daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, and long-time friends Marty Nesbitt and Eric Whitaker, who have been with him in Hawaii throughout his vacation. His wife Michelle was not present.

Duke’s Ocean Fest

dukesoceanfest_promo_day1a.jpgHONOLULU – Celebrating a water sports tradition inspired by Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, a Hawaii icon, the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation (ODKF) is presenting the 7th Annual Duke’s OceanFest, taking place at Waikiki Beach, August 17-24, 2008.

Duke’s OceanFest will feature a wide array of fun and exciting water sports competitions and events in tribute to the Duke. The weeklong celebration will culminate with the popular Waikiki Lei Parade and Draping of Duke’s Statue on the 118th anniversary of his birthday, Sunday, August 24.

FREESURF: It seemed like you just took off on a roll this year. Granted there was some talk of a rivalry between you and Sally [Fitzgibbons], but it seemed like it was more of a matter of when, not if, you would secure your title this year. Was there a point this year when you felt like, “yeah, I can win a title this year”?

Carissa Moore: I think every woman on tour wants and believes that they can win a world title, otherwise they wouldn’t be competing at this level. Dad and I talked about the title a few times, but never more than using it as motivation. Sally was nipping at my heels the whole year and there was a placement shift halfway through where I was nipping at hers. It was so close that I never really could let my guard down, just had to keep my head focused and take everything one step at a time. When the seconds started counting down in the Steph-Sally semi in France and Steph was ahead, I think that was finally the moment that I let it all go. Read more...

Rainos Hayes: Well, I grew up on the North Shore pretty much in the same place that I live now, kind of by Sunset Beach. I was a pro for a while and rode for Quiksilver from about 15 to 25 years old and had a limited amount of success.
