Makakilo's Centeio captures Xcel Pro at Sunset Beach

Makakilo's Joel Centeio earned his first professional surfing victory on the North Shore today, winning a four-man final in the Xcel Pro at Sunset Beach.

Centeio, 24, earned $10,000 for his victory in the World Qualifying Series meet.

Mason Ho was second, followed by Makua Rothman and Alex Gray.

The final was held in 4 to 8 foot surf.

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing begins with holding period for the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Hale'iwa Alii Beach Park on Nov. 12.

Billabong Pro Mundaka Round 2 Wrapped Up in Bakio - Irons Loses to Local

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 October, 2007 : - - Mundaka – Three-time World Champion Andy Irons (HAW) was ushered out of the Billabong Pro Mundaka, and likely the 2007 Foster’s ASP World Tour title race, by Basque wildcard Hodei Callazo (EUK) today. The loss is Iron’s third exit at the hands of wildcard this year.

The most decorated surfer in the history of The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing returns

 October 23 2007 - Honolulu -- Twenty-two years ago, a 15-year-old surfer from the other side of the tracks on the West Side of Oahu, Hawaii, made his pro surfing big-wave debut at the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing Series on Oahu's North Shore.

While his performance that season might not have been memorable, it launched a career that went on to include a world title and a claim to being the most successful surfer in the history of the world's most prestigious series of events - the Vans Triple Crown.

Surf pioneer and activist John Kelly Jr. dead at 88

johnkelley.jpgJohn Kelly Jr., surf pioneer and activist, died yesterday afternoon, his family said.

He was 88.

In the mid-1960s Kelly founded the grassroots ocean-based environmental group Save Our Surf, a movement that was instrumental in preventing offshore development around the Islands and saving 140 surfing sites between Pearl Harbor and Koko Head.

The Navy veteran also spoke out about nuclear weapons and was a tireless advocate for the Hawaiian sovereignty movement.

The Black Point resident had long suffered from Alzheimer's.

FREESURF: It seemed like you just took off on a roll this year. Granted there was some talk of a rivalry between you and Sally [Fitzgibbons], but it seemed like it was more of a matter of when, not if, you would secure your title this year. Was there a point this year when you felt like, “yeah, I can win a title this year”?

Carissa Moore: I think every woman on tour wants and believes that they can win a world title, otherwise they wouldn’t be competing at this level. Dad and I talked about the title a few times, but never more than using it as motivation. Sally was nipping at my heels the whole year and there was a placement shift halfway through where I was nipping at hers. It was so close that I never really could let my guard down, just had to keep my head focused and take everything one step at a time. When the seconds started counting down in the Steph-Sally semi in France and Steph was ahead, I think that was finally the moment that I let it all go. Read more...

Freesurf: What was your life like before you became a team manager?
Rainos Hayes: Well, I grew up on the North Shore pretty much in the same place that I live now, kind of by Sunset Beach. I was a pro for a while and rode for Quiksilver from about 15 to 25 years old and had a limited amount of success.
