Duke's OceanFest Celebrations Underway at Waikiki Beach

 Duke's OceanFest
Queen's Oahu Hawaii
August 22 - 25 , 2007

August 23, 2007 - Honolulu -- With arms outspread in a gesture of welcome to all, the larger-than-life bronze statue of Duke Kahanamoku on the shores of Waikiki Beach delineates where the pavement ends and the ocean that Duke loved so much, and mastered so well, begins.

This week Waikiki will come to life with the annual Duke's OceanFest celebration. If the "father of surfing" were still around today, he'd be honored to see his beloved sport and all its offshoots being practiced and enjoyed by so many.

Among this week's full slate of Duke's OceanFest activities, three of Duke's favorites will be featured: tandem surfing, stand-up paddle surfing, and longboarding.

Top Women Longboarders Hit Waikiki in Roxy Jam Honolulu

ASP WLT 3 Star Women's Event
Queen's Oahu Hawaii
August 23 - 25, 2007

August 23, 2007 - Honolulu -- A world first took place at Waikiki's Queens surf spot Thursday, as the world's top professional women longboarders took to the waves for the first stand-alone Assocation of Surfing Professionals (ASP) sanctioned event: the Roxy Jam Honolulu. There have been other professional women's longboard events in Hawaii, but this was the first ever to not run in conjunction with a men's competition.

The ladies wasted no time in proving they were worthy headliners at surfing's birthplace. On a stage of torquoise, shoulder-high waves and under clear, warm skies, 64 women competed through three rounds of competition today that whittled the field down to 16 quarter finalists.

McNamara and Mamala First Surfers to Ride Alaskan Glacier Tsunami Waves

August 15, 2007 - Honolulu -- Hawaii tow-in surfing team Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala have just returned from Alaska where they became the first - and possibly last - surfers to successfully ride glacier-generated tsunami waves of up to 25 feet. Their tsunami surfing experience took place at Child's Glacier on the Copper River, in South-Central Alaska, located near the town of Cordova, Alaska.

Sheer ice faces of over 400 feet calved away from Child's Glacier, crashing into the waters below and setting off left- and right-breaking waves that peeled across a pebble-bottom river bank for more than 300 yards, offering rides of up to one minute long. In order to catch them, the surfers would wait up to several hours in the icy water for a glacier to fall, then chase down the ensuing wave on their jetski and attempt to ride with being injured or killed by ice and rock debris.

Granger Larsen takes Open Men's Final NSSA Hawaii

August 20, 2007 - Lahaina, Hawaii - Leave it to the 2007 RVCA season surfers to make magic on Maui's south shore as 160 competitors showed up and put on a show once again at the Harbor in Lahaina.

With Saturday's two foot surf, having the right push and the right tide, things heated up enough as Kailua-Kona's Lahiki Minamishin took out the field in both the Open Boys and Juniors and today shut down the harbor entrance with a third victory in the Explorer Menehunes.

FREESURF: It seemed like you just took off on a roll this year. Granted there was some talk of a rivalry between you and Sally [Fitzgibbons], but it seemed like it was more of a matter of when, not if, you would secure your title this year. Was there a point this year when you felt like, “yeah, I can win a title this year”?

Carissa Moore: I think every woman on tour wants and believes that they can win a world title, otherwise they wouldn’t be competing at this level. Dad and I talked about the title a few times, but never more than using it as motivation. Sally was nipping at my heels the whole year and there was a placement shift halfway through where I was nipping at hers. It was so close that I never really could let my guard down, just had to keep my head focused and take everything one step at a time. When the seconds started counting down in the Steph-Sally semi in France and Steph was ahead, I think that was finally the moment that I let it all go. Read more...

Freesurf: What was your life like before you became a team manager?
Rainos Hayes: Well, I grew up on the North Shore pretty much in the same place that I live now, kind of by Sunset Beach. I was a pro for a while and rode for Quiksilver from about 15 to 25 years old and had a limited amount of success.
