Silvana Lima
ASP 5 Star WQS Men's Event #17 ASP 5 Star WQS Women's Event #5 Praia do Forte, Bahia Brazil July 17 - 22, 2008 Silvana Lima won her first title at Billabong Surf ECO Festival June 22, 2008 - With the 8,5 wave in the last seconds of the heat, the Brazilian Silvana Lima won her first title on the Billabong Surf ECO Festival in Praia do Forte, north of Bahia. At the final, the Brazilian defeated the current WQS number one, the Australian Sally Fitzgibbons, who was leading the heat in the 4 feet waves. The mens division will be ending Sunday with the quarter finals staring at 10:30 and the final 13:45 at Praia do Forte. Just two foreigners advanced to the next round on the last day of competition. Australian Shaun Cansdell and north american Nathaniel Curran are the only surfers that can hinder the second brazilian victory at Billabong Surf ECO Festival. Cansdell defeat Adriano de Souza at the first quarter and the second heat Curran defeat Leandro Bastos. The third one will be Jihad Khodr and Ricardo Ferreira, and the last quarter Marcelo Trekinho and Yuri Sodré. These are the six Brazilians who will try to repeat the Silvana's Lima victory, she turns the heat when Sally Fitzgibbons paddle in a small wave and let the best set to Silvana at the last seconds. "I didn't realize when she paddle to that wave, at this time she was really amateur because that wave was so bad. We she stand up, I spoke with God that this is my chance and the wave behind was way better. I took a risk on the first maneuver, one more came and I hear the score, I'm really happy." Say stoked Silvana Lima, that had failed minutes before to turn the heat. "Unfortunately that wave was not so good, but I believed another one is coming, although we're already at the end of the heat. I never though to loose that heat and everything goes good.", said Silvana, who got $ 4.000 for the Billabong Surf ECO Festival win, in her first WQS this year. Last year, Silvana Lima was the finalist at the Billabong Itacaré WQS and WCT, in south of Bahia but not win. Now, she can celebrate the title also in the event sponsored by Billabong. "I almost won twice in Itacaré, now my time has come and this result was very important to get me motivated once more for this year, therefore I did not start very well in Australia. I decided not to run any WQS to improve my technical and physical condition and this is was my first competitions since march, then I'm very happy to bit Sally, she already won many events this year." Sally Fitzgibbons got $ 2.000 prize money for the second place at Billabong Surf ECO Festival e 2.000 points and leading the WQS 2008 with a great advantage. "She won this event, but I will try to bit her next time. I knew that Silvana will going to fight until the last minute. I got the wrong wave at the end of the heat and she turn on the next one. Was my mistake and she deserve the victory because she took the best waves of the heat." says Sally, who bit Monik Santos at the semi final. Monik finished equal 3rd with Diana Cristina, who was bitted by Silvana Lima. The Billabong Surf ECO Festival will be finish on Sunday, but already has four surfers on the top 15 ranking to qualifying to WCT. Next week will begin another WQS 5 stars in Guarujá (SP). This is the reason for the north american Nathaniel Curran come to Brasil instead to go to 6 stars "prime" in Maldivas. "I'm stoked and I make the right decision. I decided not to go to Maldivas because is just one event and come to Brazil is more cheaper, there's two events in a row here and then I go to South Africa. I'm very happy to be on top 15", said Curran. "This place is awesome, the waves, despite the small, are good, warm water and now just two more heats to get into the final, let's see what's happening. I had a very strong heat with André Silva and I got the best wave of the heat when he had the priority. It's hard to compete against the Brazilians here, they're very good and know this kind of waves, but I'm very happy to advance to the next round." says Curran. Sunday he will defeat Leandro Bastos and the first quarter final will be Adriano de Souza against Shaun Cansdell, the australian is one of the top 15 on the WQS list. Adriano and Cansdell already were the finalists at the Billabong World Junior when Adriano won the title. "The waves in this heat was little better than my first heat today and I surf two good lefts to win the heat.” said Shaun Cansdell. "I didn't know that this result put me on the top 15, I'm very surprised, and so I'm happier than ever. But, there's a long way still to the WCT. I'm stoked, surfing well in this conditions and I hope to be in the final to improve my situation on the WQS." Adriano de Souza bit Jano Belo and both surfers already won in Bahia, but not in Praia do Forte, was at Itacaré in 2005. Adriano won the Billabong WQS and Jano Belo won the national title in the same year. Jano bit the new WQS leader Hizunome Bettero. "I'm happy to win this heat, Jano is a great surfer, he's leading the brazilian nationals this year, got two wins ina row in Pernambuco last month, know this place very well, than this victory gave me more confidence for the event. Now another excellent surfer, Shaun Cansdell, and I think will be a great heat." believe Adriano. The Billabong Surf Eco Festival is brought by Dende Produções and Axé mix, with the sponsorship of Petrobras, Governo do estado da Bahia, Nova Schin, Iberostar Bahia and Shopping Iguatemi backed by Von Zipper, Kustom, Nixon, Uranus 2, Out Light net, AL2, Midia Bus, Waves.Terra, Prefeitura Municipal de Mata de Sao Joao and Federação Baiana of Surf.
