Ecuadorian Splendor

mld_mg_1756It’s the closest word to PURE FICTION…but this one is for real!
Purfection simply means cannot be better.. and that’s what happened to our Hawaii team on day three.. all twelve surfers competed..and all twelve surfers advanced to their next rounds.. Day one found us riding and advancing in 7 heats.. day two had a blemish with our under 18 group, with three of them having to compete in the repercharge rounds where one additional loss eliminates you from the competition.. while the girls surfed to perfection..thus we were 5 and 3 on that day.. and on Tuesday with rising swells all day and a continuing barrage of heat and sun and wind in the afternoon we were 12 and 0!....

First off Dylan Goodale rode most likely the smartest heat of his life.. a four man rumble that included 2007 champion from Australia Garret Parkes as well as a competent goofy footer from the USA Fisher Heverly as well as Italian shredder Angelo Bonomelli. They choose to sit on Garrett and leave him little room to ride.  Dylan separated himself from all the paddle battles and strategic positioning and instead surfed where he observed some occasional open ended right hand corners all to himself.. climbing his scores with every wave and making way with another first place to his credit.  Parkes barely squeaked thru with a 4.0 at the horn to also advance.mld_mg_1779

The boys 16 and under shone all morning long.. with Matty Boy scoring a 8.83 on one of his waves distinguishing him as one of the surfers to beware of.. once you display to other surfers that you can  register such a high score that other surfers can never rest until a heat is over.. Ezekiel never got untracked with the exception of a lip blast here and there, yet his hits were so strong and remarkable that he had no problem advancing.  The most impressive heat of this group was put forth by Kaimana Jaquias.. he had Kolohe Andino hustling in the last five minutes just to advance.  Kaimana showed the rest of the field that when he is on his game he can be unstoppable.. and then Mr Asing, probably the most active and energetic of our under 16 year old crew cleared the table as he too advanced… all this before 12 noon!

Now it was the girls turn.. with surf rapidly rising and the outside sets shutting down it became a positioning decision.. Rainos and Megan stood along the jetty with the Hawaiian flag quietly feeding the girls some vital information.  Malia Manuel was first up for the girls and though she never connected on her waves during this change in conditions her one/two punch on some faces had the crowd in awe.. and Malia advanced to the next round.. Leila had some competition with Lakey Peterson from the USA but that simply raised her game and got her focused to deliver..and she did with two 7.14’s giving her the girls highest two wave total for the day.. Nage probably drew the roughest heat with Courtney Conologue the USA superstar and a Puerto Rican barrel rider who would not fall regardless of the oncoming sections.. but Nage pulled off two very strong waves and rode them to shore and advanced. Courtney did edge her out for first place by but a tenth of a point showing the USA team that the Hawaiian girls are all business.  Alessa who has been battling a cold and hacking cough rested at the hotel until her heat..  then she rolls out of bed and shows up on the beach and slashes her way to an easy first place finish and humbly returns to the hotel to nurse things along.  Quiet, explosive, effective. mld_mg_1880

Lastly was the sudden death rounds at podium two for our surfers with one loss each.. Tanner showed the world what he was made of by pulling off a 9 and a 6.5 in some of the most challenging conditions for a contest.. currents, shut downs, and very little room to spare left question marks in most surfers minds when they paddled out.. however Albee and Kyle both came thru with victories, keeping positive, active and strong delivering a perfect 12-0 record on day three..this day left us with the most qualifying surfers of any of the 28 teams competing!

The surf is supposed peak on Wednesday and thunder its wave to our shores right thru Thursday with another large swell on Sunday, the day of the finals!... The heats will get rougher as will the waves for day 4. mld_mg_1904
