December 1, 2008 - Sunset Beach -- The final day of Roxy Pro competition will commence with the Quarterfinals at 8:30am this morning in three-to-five foot (1.5 metre) surf at Sunset Point. Stop No. 7 of 8 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach will play a vital role in the race for the ASP Women’s World Title, with a possible champion being crowned by day’s end.
“We’re looking at clean conditions this morning in the three-to-five
foot range,” Rand Rarick, Vans Triple Crown Event Director, said. “Of
course we’d like it to be a bit bigger, but it looks like the swell is
projected to get to big for the rest of the waiting period, so we’ll be
finishing up the Roxy Pro today.”
Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20, reigning ASP Women’s World Champion and
current No. 1 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour, could clinch her
second consecutive ASP Women’s World Title today, should Sofia
Mulanovich (PER), 25, bow out early and the young Australian secures a
solid result. Gilmore will face Melanie Bartels (HAW), 26, Megan Abubo
(HAW), 30, and Coco Ho (HAW), 17, in Quarterfinal 2.
The Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach also marks the second stop on the Vans
Triple Crown (an ASP Specialty Series), with the winner being crowned
after the final event in Maui.
First up will be Quarterfinal 1 featuring Silvana Lima (BRA), 24,
Samantha Cornish (AUS), 28, Serena Brooke (AUS), 32, and Claire
Bevilacqua (AUS), 23, beginning at 8:30am.
