After weeks of horrible weather, Andy and Bruce Irons, as well as Hanalei Bay, woke up to a shining sun and a fun inside reform setting up perfectly in the 1- to 3-foot range—not to mention the crowd of hungry and anxious groms frothing on the shore, ready to participate in the Sixth Annual Irons Brothers Pintrees Classic.

Local music played on the speakers, Tin Tin fried up malasadas, and Big Tim from The Hanalei Gourmet provided lunch. Families from around the island gathered to cheer on the 12-and-under boys and girls in an event that lets the underdogs have their chance to shine.

This one-day competition has a Christmas morning feel with all the goodies given out to the groms. Each competing child receives a backpack brimming with hats, shirts, Nixon watches, Oakley glasses, DVDs, posters, stickers and more, which were donated from Andy and Bruce’s sponsors. The finalists received wooden trophies, skateboard decks, shoes, rash guards/wetsuits, board bags and more. A lucky group of chosen surfers were given airfare to compete in the HASA State Championships on O‘ahu and NSSA Nationals at Trestles in California.

irons2.jpgIn addition to all this great excitement, six JS Industries tractor surfboards were donated for the contest with Andy and Bruce deciding through the day who to give them out to. AI and Bruce’s day consisted of hanging with the groms, signing autographs and surfing an expression with their pro buddies like Dustin Barca, Kala Alexander and Makua Rothman.

"The contest is a steppingstone,” Andy said as the event wrapped up. “Without my parents I wouldn’t be here. It’s all about the encouragement and support they’ve given us to make it this far. I’ve got to give great thanks to them for showing me the right path." Volcom team manager Dave Riddle is very proud of the Irons clan and applauds the positive action taken by the Irons brothers. "They are giving back to the community where they started,” he says. “The idea of letting unranked surfers have the opportunity to win and earn these amazing prizes is unique and open-minded. As busy as they are, for them to take their time shows how much they respect and love their community.”

It’s easy to see that Andy and Bruce both care about being a good role model for the young groms who want to be successful like them. This is a contest about building self-esteem and giving the kids confidence to embrace their interests. It’s a great event to attend whether you are there to surf or soak up the sun.

A big mahalo goes out to the supporting sponsors: Volcom, Billabong, Red Bull, Von Zipper, Nixon, Oakley, Da Kine, DC Shoes, Y.M.C.A, Tamba Surf, Kai Kane, Hanalei Surf Company and Transworld Surf, Surfer and Surfing magazines.
