Date: Feb. 3, 2007
Location: Ho'okipa Beach Park, Maui
Conditions: Burly winds, beefy waves and brawny talent

Mayhem was the perfect word of the day for Ian Walsh’s Fourth Annual Menehune Mayhem surf event at Maui's Ho'okipa Beach Park. The swell rose throughout the day, starting off at 4 feet in the morning and maxing out with 8-footers by day’s end. Despite the rising swell and typical, windy conditions, the Maui groms were charging hard. Event: Ian Walsh’s Menehune Mayhem Presented by O’Neill

During the final heat of the day, the Boys 16-17 pack made it out to the peak at Ho'okipa, but due to the bumpy conditions it was extremely difficult to find a quality wave. With five minutes left in the 20-minute heat, only three waves had been ridden. Albee Layer and Isaac Stant snagged a decent scoring wave each, and then, with two minutes to go, Billy Kemper caught a right-hander that lined up for a long ride. His rail-to-rail turns down the line netted big points, and Billy took the lead with just one wave and one minute to go in the heat. But in the final 30 seconds, Isaac Stant caught one and surfed aggressively all the way to the beach. That wave was half of Billy's score but, combined with Stant’s previous wave, it took the win by half a point. It was a dramatic end to a dynamic day of competition.

mauimayhem2.jpg Awards were given out to honor Eric Diaz and Steve Cooney, two friends and former Ho'okipa chargers who passed away. Eric's little brother, Billy, and Steve Cooney's mom gave away the awards. "These are the sportsmanship awards," explains Walsh. "These go to the kids that really stand out on the day of the event, in all aspects, not just surfing.” Ian organized the event with the help of his mother Kitty, and brothers Luke, Shaun and DK.

Each competitor walked away with a huge bag of goodies, regardless of their final ranking. "This event is for the kids and the community,” Ian said. “It is about going out there, doing your best, and having as much fun as you can with your friends.” —Chelsea Johns
