| Makua Kai. Why? |

Maybe Makua had to fill out some official ASP form that bound him to using his birth name in full. Perhaps he trademarked his name? Conspiracy theories abound, the questions begs, why the sudden widespread middle name usage by the media? Some theories: 1) It sounds cool and that’s how Makua wants to be addressed from now on. End of story. What about it? 2) There is a big business venture on the horizon and he had to trademark his official full name for legal/financial purposes. 3) Some media goober started using Makua’s middle name on a whim and the common domino effect that often makes journalists seem like cattle took over. Copy editors and writers around the world are inserting “Kai” all over the place without knowing why. FSM is not innocent here. Our red pens have been busy adding “Kai” to Makua’s name throughout the past few issues. But why? A call to Eddie Rothman, Makua’s father, would straighten this out. They live in the same house and are more friends and surf buddies than anything. Eddie would know. “Well, his name means ‘Father of the Sea’,” Eddie explained. “But as to why everyone keeps calling him Makua Kai, I don’t know. That’s his name, but we just call him Makua. I don’t know why [the media is] doing that. Makua’s on a trip right now but I know he would give you the same answer. Just something that took hold, I guess.” So there you have it. You’ve got the scoops straight from the source. The media’s cattle mentality strikes again. Makua just returned from Indo, and as you can tell from the cover shot, this daddy of the sea is living up to his name.—Tiff Hervey

A strange phenomenon emerged among surf media recently. In every piece
of press on Makua Rothman, he is referred to as Makua Kai Rothman
lately. With no real explanation, one might begin to wonder, is it one
of those celebrity things like when Sean John Combs entered the music
scene as Sean “Puffy” Combs, then changed his name to just ‘Puffy
Combs’, then to ‘Puff Daddy’, later to ‘P. Diddy’ and now, as of
October 2006 according to Wikipedia, he is simply ‘Diddy’.
