Event: 22nd annual Local Motion Surf Into Summer presented by O’Neill
Date: May 26-28, 2007
Location: Ala Moana Bowls
Conditions: Glassy, 2 to 3 feet

The best contest of the summer returned to the best performance wave on the South Shore, Ala Moana Bowls, after having to relocate to Sandy Beach last year due to the record-breaking sewage spill. As one of the largest and most revered amateur surfing events in the state, this year’s 22nd annual Local Motion Surf Into Summer saw 267 shortboard, longboard and bodyboard competitors over three days of pumping, summer surf. The contest kicks off the summer season on the South Shore, full of fun surf and contests almost every weekend.

On this three-day, Memorial weekend, the brothers Cazimero were on top of their game— Kekoa and Booboo Cazimero, that is. Fresh Kaiser High graduate Kekoa Cazimero won the Junior Men’s division (ages 15-17 shortboard) and his younger brother, Booboo, took first in the Junior Men’s Bodyboard division.

Surfer genetics couldn’t be beat on the girl’s side, either. Sisters Ashley and Lani Hunter of Kahuku shared the victory spotlight, Ashley taking the Girls (17 and under) title and Lani winning the Women's (18 and over) shortboard division.

Other contest highlights included Keanu Asing scoring a perfect 10 to secure his first place in the shortboard boys final. Kalani David was on fire, scoring two waves for a total of 9.83 for first place in the Menehune (11 & under) Final.

This year, an exhibition heat from ACCESSURF, and a first time Industry Division were added to the fun. ACCESSURF provides surfing and ocean access for people with disabilities. Their 30-minute exhibition heat was an inspiring show of wave riding techniques and methods for disabled individuals. The industry heat featured surf reps from O’Neill, Billabong, Quiksilver, RVCA, Fox, Oakley, BAYVI, Hurley, FreeSurf and Local Motion. Billabong’s Keoni Watson snagged first place and Jeannie Chesser placed second, out-surfing O’Neill’s Wayne Takamure, Hurley’s Seth McKinney and Oakley’s Jason Sakamoto. Surf Into Summer came to a close at Ala Moana’s Magic Island with an awards ceremony packed with trophies and killer prizes for the top six finalists in each division.—TH
