Road to the Crown The 26th Annual Vans Triple Crown of Surfing Preview

triplelogo.jpgBy Kevin Whitton

On the North Shore, some things are inevitable come November and December: swells rolling in from the northwest, trade winds, the rain, the rainbows, the traffic, the tourists and the annual Mecca of professional surfing to the already bustling seven-mile stretch of prime surfing real estate, both in the water and on the beach. Some people are sick of it; they loathe it in fact, the influx of outsiders, the ignorance and disrespect in the lineups and on the highway and the overflowing trashcans on the beach paths.

She Rips: Nage Melamed

Nage Melamed gets to work with the tools for success

By Christen Vidanovic

Fourteen-year-old Kaua‘i native Nage Melamed was made for the water. She was born in her parent’s bathtub after they returned home from a trip to Tahiti. Her dad immediately called her Nage, which means “to swim” in French. The name is a perfect reflection of the Hanalei ripper, and Nage has been gracefully swimming through life ever since, balancing obligations (school) with her passions (the ocean).

Talk Story: Ola Eleogram

By Chelsea Johns

Ola Eleogram

Age: 21
Birthdate: May 28, 1986
Hometown: Hana, Maui
Homebreak: Koki Beach
Sponsors: No Fear, UM Surfboards, Anarchy, FCS, Gorilla Grip, Hi-Tech Surf Shop

In over twenty-five years of the Association of Surfing Professionals’ (ASP) existence, there has never been a Maui surfer on the World Championship Tour. So it’s no surprise that all of the young hotshots coming out of the Valley Isle are vying to be the first. Hana-born Ola Eleogram is just one in a growing pool of hungry Mauians determined to mirror the success of neighboring isle WCT-ers like Andy, Bruce, and Fred.

Off the Map: South Africa

Going Right Bru
By Beau Flemister

August 15, 2008—So maybe this surf/culture trip I’ve been on for the last seven months was supposed to be about traveling to and exploring “unknown” spots. The destinations way off the map from the regular breaks surfed by the WCT on the Dream Tour. But come on, if you’re in South Africa you have to go to J-Bay. And seriously, in a place where you frequently hear the local people make clucking sounds intermittently while they speak, or see giraffes and antelope casually grazing on the side of the road, you’re still not too far from the exotic.

FREESURF: It seemed like you just took off on a roll this year. Granted there was some talk of a rivalry between you and Sally [Fitzgibbons], but it seemed like it was more of a matter of when, not if, you would secure your title this year. Was there a point this year when you felt like, “yeah, I can win a title this year”?

Carissa Moore: I think every woman on tour wants and believes that they can win a world title, otherwise they wouldn’t be competing at this level. Dad and I talked about the title a few times, but never more than using it as motivation. Sally was nipping at my heels the whole year and there was a placement shift halfway through where I was nipping at hers. It was so close that I never really could let my guard down, just had to keep my head focused and take everything one step at a time. When the seconds started counting down in the Steph-Sally semi in France and Steph was ahead, I think that was finally the moment that I let it all go. Read more...

_Rainos-Heff_MG_0564Billabong Team Manager/Mentor to Keanu Asing

Freesurf: What was your life like before you became a team manager?
Rainos Hayes: Well, I grew up on the North Shore pretty much in the same place that I live now, kind of by Sunset Beach. I was a pro for a while and rode for Quiksilver from about 15 to 25 years old and had a limited amount of success.
