The second annual O’Neill Team Challenge

At the second annual O’Neill Team Challenge the cream of the crop in women’s surfing pushed themselves to the limit, much like they do in all surfing events. Only in this competition mullet wigs, purple leotards, coconut bras and leopard print accessories replaced board shorts and jerseys, and the winning team was determined on their mastery of rafting, inner-tube wave riding, boogie boarding, tug of war, dodge ball and their “creative expression” in the water.

Rules? 1. Snaking allowed, 2. Stealing wave crafts allowed, 3. Serena Brooke not allowed by the scoreboard.

Everyone from the tweens to the world champs showed up at the O’Neill girls’ house, located beachfront on the North Shore between Pupukea and Ehuaki. Competitors like Rochelle Ballard, Megan Abubo, Layne Beachley, Amy Donohoe and Sofia Mulanovich battled it out, but did their best to avoid injuries (two fingers were broken last year) since the Roxy Pro was expected to run the following day. With a catered lunch, a well stocked mini bar and a stereo pumping the jams, the day was a chance for the ladies to let loose and relieve stress often associated with contest season on the North Shore. “It’s a fun, competitive day to bring out the best in everybody,” O’Neill girls team manager Karin Kendrik said.

After a day full of laughter, competition and chaos, Team Billabong was announced champion and Linda Fischer received the coveted MVP award. Minutes after the awards ceremony officials discovered the scoreboard had been tampered with and Team O’Neill robbed of their rightful first place trophy. Next year’s event promises to be as insane as this year’s (costume plans are already underway). Let’s just hope there are some scoreboard security personnel on hand this time around. –Alee Thompson
