“Walk the Walk” fashion showDetention, school lunch and waiting for the bus are a few of the downsides of life as high school student. This school year however, Hurley took the attention off the mystery meat and bus stop blues by handing out the hottest homework assignment on campus: planning, promoting and executing a fashion show. Hawai‘i’s first ever “Walk the Walk” competition challenged Mililani High School, Mid Pacific Institute and Pearl City High School to feature Hurley’s Spring 2008 lines of clothing in a creative and energetic fashion production. Hurley provided clothing from their men’s, young contemporary and swimsuit lines, but left everything else up to the students. Surf stars, models, and the industry elite arrived at Pipeline Café alongside friends, families and fellow students of participating schools. Attendees were treated to pupus and live performances by L.A.’s Street Drum Corp and local reggae band, Hot Rain. Each school’s turn on the runway was judged on overall vibe, crowd support, hair and makeup, flow, creativity, energy, school spirit, promotional strategy and illustration of Hurley's brand message. The judging panel was made of Hurley family members including Bob Hurley, team riders Rob Machado and Kekoa Cazimero and Hurley girlies Rosie, Gabby and Kaua‘i’s Sonya Balmores. Host Peter King presented the winning $5,000 check to Pearl City High School. The students donated their winnings to teacher Robin Ancog, who is battling breast cancer. In addition to the prize money, all three schools received a portion of the proceeds from special edition Hurley tees sold at T&C, and were able to keep the clothing featured on the runway. To all the high school students out there who didn’t walk the walk this year, keep your fingers crossed for another show in the future. –Alee Thompson
