As if the waves weren’t big enough for Jamie Sterling at the 2008 Da Hui Backdoor Shootout, he took off mid-contest and flew over to California for the Mavericks Surf Contest where he charged his way to third place in 25- to 30-foot swell, ideal Maverick’s conditions. He was also honored with the Jay Moriarity Award for the intense spirit and passion he exemplifies for big-wave surfing.

Occy (4) didn’t take much time off in his retirement from competitive surfing. It seems the warm water of the Gold Coast easily lulled him back into competition for the 2008 Jim Beam Surftag event. He paddled out with the Snapper Rocks team at Duranbah and led the crew to a victory in the event.

ASP World Tour surfer Chris Ward (3), the 17th seed for the 2008 season, found himself in a scuffle outside a bar in Mammoth, Calif. in the early hours of Tuesday, Jan. 8. According to ASP Rules & Disciplinary Committee Chairman Robert Gerard, “Any surfer who damages the image of the sporting body, no matter the place or location, is subject to suspension or expulsion from the ASP World Tour.” The ASP will release further information once its investigation is complete and the criminal case is resolved.

Surfers unite!
