Date: Jan. 17 & 18, 2008
Location: Sunset Beach, O‘ahu
Conditions: Quadruple overhead for the five-foot juniors.

No Fear and Hard Rock teamed up to sponsor the Koastal Kaos Pro Junior at Sunset Beach in late January. Aside from valuable contest experience surfing infamous Sunset, the ASP sanctioned event offered top surfers the opportunity to qualify for next year's World Junior Championships.

"Hawai‘i's surfing community needs to provide our own events to create more opportunities for these young surfers. By sponsoring this event, No Fear and Hard Rock are helping our Hawai‘i juniors who have their sights set on next year's Junior World Championship and, ultimately, a career in professional surfing,” said Contest Director Liam McNamara.

koastal2.jpg Solid northwest swell poured into Sunset throughout the two-day event and under-20-year-old junior competitors were soon staring down 8- to 12-foot sets on the final day of competition. Tyler Newton, the 17-year-old from Hanalei, Kaua‘i just coming off a charging performance at the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout, grabbed second place and valuable points toward a future seeding on the ‘QS. "It was perfect pumping Sunset—big, and I was a bit scared,” said Newton.

The epic conditions at Sunset posed no problem for Kiron Jabour and he handily took down his fellow finalist in the 30-minute heat, earning a berth in the 2008 World Jr. Championships. For the win, Jabour snagged $2,000 and well deserved bragging rights.
