Town and Country go head to headBy Kevin Whitton When it rains, it pours. And on July 16, the final day of the holding period for the second Macy’s E-Series event at Ala Moana Bowls, it was raining three- to four-foot sets and the high scores were pouring in for the professional portion of the ASP 1-star WQS showdown. It was a full day of bests, and the conditions were setting the blistering pace. “This is the best day of competitive surfing I’ve seen this year,” touring professional ASP Judge Dave Shipley. “ The waves we’ve seen today and the level of surfing is as good as anything you could possibly witness in professional surfing.” Competing for valuable points toward qualification for the 2008 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and the 2009 ASP World Tour and prize money, the level of surfing was going through the roof as surfers were nabbing barrel after barrel and shredding the lefts to pieces. To hammer the point, in the semi-finals the average scoring ride for all competitors was 9.25 points out of a possible ten, a milestone for competitive south shore surfing. 10-point rides were owned by Evan Valiere in round three, Bowls staple David Gonsalves in the quarterfinal and Flynn Novak in the semis. In true competitive form, Triple Crown Champion Kaipo Jaquias nailed the highest two-wave heat total at 19.65 points in his semi-final heat (9.85 and 9.8 point rides). The final was a match up of two veterans going up against two young North Shore surfers. Flynn Novak, the only goofyfooter in the final, picked off the biggest waves and pulled in deep, edging out the boys to secure first place and $2,500. Davy Boy Gonsalves used his intimate knowledge with the wave to take second and $1,000. Jason Shibata took third and Kaipo Jaquias fourth, earning $800 and $700, respectively.
