West Oz: Do Work Son
Traveling the world, surfing different and new waves, experiencing new
cultures—sounds like a dream vacation, right? But what if it was your
job? Well it is if you’re a pro surfer. Today there are two main roads
professional surfers take; one involves contest jerseys and the other
just a board and the desire to rip. The differences between the world
of contest surfing and free surfing are many; one thrives on results
while the other revolves around capturing explosive and progressive
surfing in perfect waves, but occasionally the two can be combined.
This was the case of this year’s annual trek to Margaret River, Western
Australia in April.
With the WQS six-star prime Drug Aware Pro going on in Margaret River, several hundred WQS surfers from around the world converged on the sleepy town. This was also the case for Hawai‘i ‘QS surfers Joel Centeio, Sean Moody, Jesse Merle-Jones, Kekoa Bacalso and Ola Eleogram. These guys did their part making it to the contest to compete for valuable prize money and points, but what happens when someone bows out earlier than expected? Well, you do work, son. Taking advantage of the wave-rich southwest coast of Western Australia, these Hawaiian powerhouses set out to make the contest journey a photo trip as well. In between heats and out of earshot from the contest horn, these guys were busy working, getting pitted and getting the shot. What follows is photographic evidence exemplifying the phrase, “Do Work Son!” —Tyler Rock
